Cleaning your cage is important to do especially if your pig or pigs have a small cage.
SPOT CLEAN the cage every day which basically means take out only dirty bedding daily
COMPLETELY CLEAN out the cage about every week considering on the size of your cage. Here's how to: ~Vinegar Spray Half White Vinegar/ Half Water
~
~CLEANING YOUR PIG'S CAGE~
Step 1: Take out all toys, food bowls, houses, and basically any items on the floor of the cage. Step 2: Take a dust pan or put on gloves to remove the dirty bedding and throw away. Make sure you get all of it off the bottom of the area. Now, use the vinegar mix and spray the area with a thin layer of the liquid.
Step 3: Use a rag, washcloth, or paper towels to wipe the area clean and dry. Now replace with clean bedding(about 11/2 - 2 inches thick), and pat down. Replace all items you had in the cage, and you're done- Just add pigs!!
Having a big cage is important, and filling it with the proper accessories is important also. So here are some reccomended cage items to keep your guinea pig happy, occupied, and even healthy!
HAY RACK- A hay rack is a must have in every cage and guinea pigs need hay to stay healthy. Hay should be offered at all times in large quantities. If you have a grid cage, then you can bend a grid in a "v" and hook it together in your guinea pig's cage. Then stuff it with hay and leave the rest for your piggies to enjoy munching on. But if you have a regular cage, then you can make a "Hay Box". Just take an empty shoe box, and fill the bottom of the shoebox with hay(not including the lid). Make sure to cut a door for your piggy to easily come in and out of their hay box.
HOUSE-All guinea pigs need to have a enclosed house somewhere in their cage. They need to have somewhere to sleep that makes them feel safe, and comfortable. You can find many houses at pet stores available for guinea pigs. Pigloos are the most popular guinea pig houses, and pigloos are a good size for guinea pigs if you get the right one. Make sure to get an appropriate size house for your piggy, especially if you have more than one. If you have more than 3, I reccomend buying more than one house for your piggies cage.
POTTY BOX- A potty box is not a necessity for a cage, but if you want less mess in your cage, I would get one. Finding pellets for a guinea pig potty box is not hard at all, and are probably available at any pet store with small pet items. And you can find a corner potty box at a pet store that fits right in the corner of any cage. Although potty training your piggy seems almost impossible, it isn't really. Right now, I have a potty box in Maddy and Annie's cage, and they only go in their box. Of course every once and a while, they will go outside it, but they are making progress.
TOY- Some sort of toy in a Guinea Pig's cage will keep them occupied and entertained. Even just a tunnel, paper ball, a sheet of newspaper, and so on, will keep them happy. Visit the "Caring for you Piggy" page to get a list of toys for your piggy and its cage.
WATER BOTTLE AND FOOD BOWL- It's pretty obvious that a water bottle and a food bowl is a needed item in every guinea pig's cage. But it IS a necessity for every cage. a simple food bowl that connects to the side of your cage is fine. But if you have one that sits on the ground, then make sure that it is heavy enough so you don't end up having to clean up the spilled pellets. A water bottle is needed for every cage, especially if you have your piggy living outside. Make sure that the water is cool enough on a hot day.
