Guinea Pig Cafe

The site made just for Guinea Pigs.

Warning: Running Balls

Please do NOT put your Guinea Pig in a Hamster Ball, even though pet stores have bigger balls that say they are for guinea pigs, too, they should NOT be put in one.

Why?

If you look at your Guinea Pig, you can clearly see their spines curve upward. Because of this shape, Guinea Pigs' backs are not suitable to be in running balls. As soon as you put them in, their spine is forced to curve down (oww!).

Create a recipe book!

You can easily create a fun, healthy recipe book by filling it with tons of different fruits and

vegatables combined together.

Please take note: you should not bake, heat, or freeze any of the fruits or vegetables, just put together.

You could create a carrot log, by piecing together carrots on top of a

celery stick. Be creative and use your imagination to make tons of different combinations of fruits

and veggies. Have fun naming you creations based on what they look like or what their made of.

Celebrate their birhday!

When it comes time for your Guinea Pig's birthday, you can celebrate

it fun, and creatively  by using some of these ideas...

If you are unknown of your pet's birthday, ask your vet to determine your guinea pigs age and/or set a birth date yourself.

Celebrate by putting up self-made decorations!

Make a veggie cake. You can use your Guinea Pig Recipe Book (last article) to help you create it!

Buy your guinea pig a new toy, house, playpen, etc. Or anything else your guinea pig enjoys, and even wrap it!

Host a birthday party and make invitations to send to other Guinea Pig owners.

Have fun and come up with other ideas!

Make a Playpen!!

Make a playpen!

I recommend you going to a local pet store and looking at the playpen options that they offer you. Don't be fooled, though. many playpens look big enough on the picture, but look at the measurements. Also keep you eye out for playpens  that are for hamsters, because these are too small, and the walls are too low, so make sure that the walls are high enough so that your Guinea Pig doesn't climb out.

Fill the playpen with fun objects for them to play on, hide in and run through. Like Bricks/rocks, wooden balls, their favorite toys, wooden blocks for them to chew on, and maybe a plastic container or two.

Don't forget to put in some fruit in a plastic bowl, too!

Make an Obstacle Course!

Make a fun obstacle course for your Piggy to run through!

You can make one easily with items such as these: PVC pipes, ramps, plastic containers, shoe boxes, and anything else piggy-friendly. Set the items up in a line and put treats for them along the way, to help them get through. Have fun watching them get through the maze any way they can to get the treats! Make it as big as you like, and if you have more than one piggy, then they can race! Make 2 obstacle courses exactly the same, or different but fair in length. Then see who makes it out first. make a ribbon for 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place, etc. and place it in their cage, depending on who came in what. Good Luck! Have fun!

Spend time with your piggy!

Spending time with your guinea pig is the most important thing you can do, especially if you only have one guinea pig. If you have more than one guinea pig they can keep each other company.

- Sit in a safe room that is closed off and sit down with your guinea pig.

- Pet it and feed it small treats like veggies. If you just adopted your guinea pig, it may be scared. This is completely normal.

Spending time with it may be difficult because it may run away from you, or seem to freeze and not accept any food. This means it needs to spend more time with you. To help your guinea pig feel more safe, go into a nice dark room. Guinea pigs are more active at night and like this.

You must spend time with your piggy for at least 15-30 minutes each day.

Build a City!

Make a cardboard city! Building the cardboard city really isn't that hard. It just requires patience, time, and creativity. Grab a cardboard box, or anything with sides, and put in empty cereal boxes, tissue boxes, or maybe your Guinea Pig's house. If you want to get really creative, decorate the boxes with construction paper and make each building unique. Cut doors in some of the boxes so you piggy can go inside. Your guinea pig will have a ball running through the streets and exploring the city!

Make a Cavy Cozy!

Making a Cavy Cozy really isn't that hard. You could figure out the directions for making one by just looking at it.

They are huge hits with Guinea Pigs because they love to snuggle in them, lie next to them, etc. Of course, buying one from a pet store is much easier, creating one yourself is fun and adds a personal Guinea Pig owners touch to it! Have fun, and be creative.

Toys

Toys for Guinea Pigs are sometimes a waste, but the simpler the toy, better. The more complicated, the more likely your guinea pig won't be interested in it and won't play with it. Because guinea pigs aren't as playful as hamsters or ferrets, they don't need many toys. But giving them the right toys to play with can keep them easily occupied.

COZIES-- every guinea pig would love a cavy cozy! seen above, guinea pigs love to snuggle up in them, sleep in them, play in them, etc.

TUNNELS--Guinea pigs love to run through and hide in tunnels. it can be a chube tunnel, like the one that you buy at a pet store, or it can be a PVC pipe in the shape of a + or an angle. Guinea pigs love the PVC pipes in shapes. You can easily move any tunnel around their cage, and you can use it in playtime, too!

PAPER TOWEL/TOILET PAPER TUBES-- you can stuff timothy hay in the tubes, too. Guinea pigs need to keep their teeth worn down, and chewing on the paper towel/toilet paper tube will help. The cardboard on the tube is non-toxic to guinea pigs so it can't harm them at all. Be sure to cut a slit down the tube to make sure that the curious little piggies don't get stuck in the tiny tube, and to throw away the tube when it gets old and worn down.

BRICKS/ROCKS-- bricks, and large, flat rocks are a big hit because guinea pigs like to run around on them and climb on them. They also help wear down your guinea pig's nails to keep them nice and short.

LIGHTWEIGHT BALLS-- lightweight balls such as ping pong balls can easily be pushed around by you guinea pig. They like to see this and seem very interested that they made it move! yes, very simple, but can keep them entertained. Maddy, my guinea pig, loves to push around her ball and see it move when she jerks her head to the side!

FLOWER POTS-- Guinea pigs love to hide in flower pots, especially the big ones. if you put a small one in their cage, though, they will enjoy that just as much. always use clay flower pots, not plastic ones, because they could chew on the plastic and sometimes that can be bad.

PLASTIC CONTAINERS-- plastic containers-no matter what size- are enjoyable to guinea pigs. if you place it right side up, and put veggies in there, they like to knock it over to get the vegetables.

Paper Paradise!

  This is a great idea!

First, find some extra newspaper and separate each sheet of

paper. Crumple up each sheet and start placing them next to each other, creating a hollow

inside. Make sure all the newspapers are connected, and there's enough space in there for

your piggy(s) to run around in! My Guinea Pigs ADORE this! Be creative by placing tubes in

there, treats, fruit and veggies, and your Guinea Pigs favorite things! The walls will cave in,

and the roof might collapse, so you should put items in there, like maybe a water bottle to

keep the roof up so it doesn't fall down on your Guinea Pig while it's scampering through

the paper paradise. Take note, you must be watching your Guinea Pig at all times! They

are very curious animals and they might peek through the edge of the paper and quietly run

out. You can place the newspaper inside a playpen, so you can easily make higher roofs. I

guarantee your Guinea Pig(s) will enjoy running around, scampering, munching, playing, and

exploring in the paper!

Home-Made Toys from viewers

Here's fun ideas sent in by GPC's viewers:

Cardboard Fruit Tube

Cut slits in a cardboard tube at each end and stuff veg and fruit or even hay insde, then close up the ends by overlapping and folding (NO GLUE OR SELLOTAPE!) and put it in the cage! It would be a fun yummy idea for the pigs, mine enjoy it loads!!!

Remember: When it comes to paper tubes, Guinea Pig's can easily get stuck in them. Also, make sure its not a paper towel tube, as these are MUCH to long! Make sure when your Guinea Pig(s) has devoured all the fruit, you take the tube out of the cage :)

Paper towel tube + Fruit = Happy Guinea Pig

An easy 5 minute activity to do:

Put a tennis ball in a sock than sow up the end you your pigs will love them! They carry it around like a baby carrys a blanket.

Pig Paddle Ball

I found a paddle ball toy in my room, so I cut off the ball and string from the paddle and tied it to the top of the Guinea Pig cage in the middle so that it hangs down. My guinea pig loves it :] i thought it was a cute idea for my guinea pig so that she has something to do while im sleeping at night and unable to play with her.
